Green Talk with Sanjay Ganjoo
Q1. Can you elaborate on the specific challenges and concerns IFGE is working to mitigate in the Indian renewable energy sector?
Ans: Several challenges are there to address in the Indian renewable energy sector to push forward. As
IFGE is a member-driven association, we are well aware of the ground reality. I can name some of the
crucial challenges like land acquisition, sourcing of raw materials, financial and technological
viability of the project, access to the funding, top of that policy and regulatory framework.
In our approach, we prioritize fostering awareness about future trends as an ongoing endeavor, a journey
we're already halfway through. We have seasoned industry experts serving as advisors, and chairpersons
and some of them are trailblazers in their area. Their vast work experience helps us to craft strategies
on how to tackle the issues arising in the sector.
Q2. How does IFGE ensure a balanced representation of the diverse interests within the national renewable energy sector (bio, solar, wind, etc.)?
Ans: IFGE employs several strategies to ensure that diverse interests within India's renewable energy
sector are adequately represented. We actively engage stakeholders from various segments such as
bioenergy, solar, wind, and others. We establish sectoral working groups where representatives from each
technology can discuss specific challenges and opportunities. Additionally, we advocate for
technology-specific policies and incentives tailored to the needs of each sector. Our research
initiatives provide insights into the potential and challenges of different technologies and the ground
reality of the sectors.
These efforts ensure that all voices are heard and considered in shaping the future of India's renewable
energy landscape.
Q3. Can you provide examples of how IFGE promotes sustainable energy solutions that also contribute to economic development?
Ans: Before giving the examples I would like to introduce IFGE’s Forums - Compressed Bio Gas Producer Forum, Biomass Global Associates Forum, Electric Vehicle Industry Forum, Solar Power Industry Forum, Biodiesel Processors Forum, Bamboo Development Forum, Grain Ethanol Distillers Association and members in these forums are from different areas of that relevant sector.
We closely monitor the current economic situation of the sectors. This proximity helped us to plan our
actions. At IFGE, we're all about bringing people together to make a real difference. We work closely
with governments, businesses, and communities to make sure our sustainable energy projects not only help
the planet but also boost local economies.
Our main focus is on policy advocacy. By advocating for supportive policies, regulations, and
incentives, we incentivize investment in renewable energy projects, thereby unlocking economic
opportunities while advancing environmental sustainability.
We forge strategic partnerships with governments, businesses, and communities to implement sustainable
energy projects. By leveraging these collaborations, we ensure that our initiatives are aligned with
local economic development goals and create synergies that maximize their impact.
We facilitate investment in sustainable energy infrastructure by connecting investors with viable
projects. Through our network and expertise, we help catalyze financing for renewable energy
initiatives, stimulating economic growth in regions where these projects are deployed.
We also actively do knowledge sharing and exchange of best practices among stakeholders in the
sustainable energy ecosystem.
Through these initiatives, IFGE actively promotes sustainable energy solutions that not only mitigate
environmental risks but also contribute to robust economic development, creating a pathway towards a
more prosperous and sustainable future.
Embracing biomass-related income possibilities can promote comprehensive development plus ecological sustainability in India's backwoods.
Q4. How does IFGE collaborate with the government to support ambitious plans for the rapid deployment of renewable energy sources?
Ans: At IFGE, our collaboration with government partners is about working closely to make big things
happen in renewable energy. We focus on building relationships based on trust and understanding their
needs and goals. We offer our expertise and support, whether it's providing guidance, connecting them
with resources, or helping bring different groups to the table for collaboration. Our dedicated efforts
have led to the creation of the many policies that the Government has announced for the renewable energy
sector. We provide continuous feedback to the Govt., in shaping up the policies.
By teaming up with Governments, we're moving towards a future powered by sustainable energy, for the
benefit of all.
Q5. In advocating for India's viewpoint on economic development, how does IFGE address the global issue of climate change?
Ans: When it comes to advocating for India's perspective on economic development, IFGE approaches it from
a deeply human standpoint, recognizing the need for progress that doesn't sacrifice our planet's health.
We understand that India, like many countries, faces the dual challenge of boosting its economy while
also addressing climate change. So, we work closely with Indian leaders and communities to find
solutions that benefit both people and the planet. This means supporting renewable energy projects that
not only create jobs and drive economic growth but also reduce harmful emissions. Our all initiatives
always result in lowering climate challenge issues.
Q6. What are the key emerging trends and challenges that IFGE sees in the Indian renewable energy sector, and how does the organization plan to address them?
Ans: We are witnessing some exciting shifts and facing some pressing challenges in the Indian renewable energy sector. One trend that's catching our attention is the increasing interest in biofuels as a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. It's a promising development for reducing emissions and promoting energy security. However, there are hurdles to overcome, such as ensuring sustainable feedstock supply chains and addressing concerns about land use and biodiversity. To address these challenges, we're focusing on promoting sustainable practices and standards across the bioenergy value chain, from sourcing to production.
We're also advocating for policies that support responsible bioenergy development while safeguarding environmental and social interests. Additionally, we're investing in research and development to improve bioenergy technologies and make them more efficient and cost-effective. IFGE aims to unlock the full potential of bioenergy in India, creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for all. Another trend is the increasing interest in decentralized energy solutions, like rooftop solar, especially in rural areas. To support this, we're focusing on empowering local communities with the knowledge and resources they need to harness clean energy themselves, creating a more resilient and inclusive energy landscape.
By staying ahead of these trends and collaborating closely with stakeholders, IFGE aims to drive a
renewable energy revolution in India that's not only environmentally sound but also socially and
economically empowering for all.
Q7. In your opinion, where does Indian renewable energy stand today? Can you elaborate on how India’s Green Energy can turn the tables?
Ans: Indian renewable energy has made remarkable strides, positioning the country as a promising player
from a global perspective. Significant investments in solar, wind, and bioenergy are driving impressive
growth rates, transforming lives by creating jobs, fueling economic growth, and improving access to
clean electricity, particularly in rural areas. However, there's still more to do. By further embracing
green energy, India can not only reduce carbon emissions but also address pressing social and economic
challenges. This investment strengthens energy security, reduces air pollution, and mitigates climate
change impacts while empowering communities, especially in remote regions, with reliable electricity and
new development opportunities. It's not just about power generation; it's about empowering people and
building a brighter and more sustainable future for all Indians.
